(KPL) The Vientiane Sustainable Urban Transport Project has achieved 63% completion.

The project involves establishing an urban transport management system, improving public bus services, developing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, and enhancing traffic management.

Key activities of the project, co-funded by ADB and the government, also include building parking management systems and improving pedestrian pathways and non-motorized transport systems (NMT).

Mr. Khampan Vanthana, the project manager, reported significant progress in constructing the infrastructure for the BRT system, which will span 12.9 km, connecting Chao Fa Ngum Park to the National University of Laos.

The construction of this route has reached 15% completion and is expected to be finished by mid-2025, with trial BRT services set to begin by the end of 2025 and official operations commencing in early 2026.

The BRT system will include 27 stations, with 22 traffic island stations and 5 curbside stations. The system will utilize 55 electric buses, each 12 meters long, with four doors (two on each side) and seating for 40 passengers, including those seating specially designed for passengers with disabilities.

In addition, the project includes the construction of a bus maintenance and control center located on Road 13 South in Phonkhame Village, Xaythany District. The installation and upgrading of 41 traffic lights along the BRT route are also underway, with 24 new traffic light systems being installed and improvements to traffic signals, poles, and control cabinets at 13 locations.

This new public transport system will operate alongside the existing bus network managed by the Vientiane State Bus Enterprise, covering a total distance of 148 kilometers. The BRT service will offer a reliable timetable, with buses stopping only at designated stations, and passengers will use smart cards for fare payments. Each bus will be equipped with CCTV, Wi-Fi, and a complete set of safety devices, providing a modern and secure transport option for the residents of Vientiane.

The project is part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility in Vientiane, making the city more sustainable and accessible for all.
