(KPL) The first Lao National One District One Product (ODOP) exhibition will be held next week, from Feb 22-26, at the Lao-ITECC in Vientiane Capital, a press conference was told in Vientiane Capital yesterday.

The exhibition will be organised by the Trade and Product Promotion Department under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Director General of the Trade and Product Promotion Department Somvang Ninthavong told the press conference.

This event will feature national ODOP products and open opportunities to ODOP units and entrepreneurs to present and promote their products for ODOP certificates. Meanwhile, sellers and buyers will have opportunities to discuss issues of common interest.

“A One District One Product is a product made from craftsmanship, wisdom, ideas and resources indigenous to a particular district. They can be both tangible and intangible like services, cultural and tourist attractions, lifestyles and traditions,” said Mr Somvang.

The department has encouraged entrepreneurs and producers in the country to establish their own ODOP units.

Currently, there are almost 130 ODOP units producing more than 472 products. They are in 67 districts nationwide. Handicrafts share more than 70% of ODOP products, followed by food and beverages at 21.7 %, and traditional herbal products representing 7.6%.

“Over 250 booths have registered to display their products at the exhibition and we expect that more will do the same over the coming days,” said Mr Somvang.
