(KPL) Myanmar and Laos have vowed to enhance their political and security cooperation, a semi-official media reported Wednesday.
The two countries made the pledge at the 11th meeting of the Myanmar-Laos Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation held in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, which was co-chaired by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin and visiting Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, views were exchanged on issues of mutual interest such as management of Myanmar-Laos Friendship Bridge, exchange of high-level visits, cooperation between the two foreign ministries, and cooperation regarding transnational crime and drug control, the report said.
Xinhua reported on 4 March that Myanmar and Laos are speeding up efforts in the construction of a friendship bridge across the Mekong River that will link Myanmar's Tachileik in Shan state and the Luang Namtha Province of Laos.
Upon completion of the bridge this year, the two countries are expected to see smooth and speedy road transportation between the two countries. The bridge will also contribute to a swift flow of commodities and better economic development.
The volume of trade between Myanmar and Laos is still low compared with other neighboring countries.
In January last year, Myanmar and Laos held their fourth Ministerial Meeting on the prevention and control of drugs between the two countries, laying down a plan for curbing the illegal drug trade and chemical precursor smuggling in the border areas as well as alternative development plans.
