(KPL) The European Union, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Sports and the National University of Laos, organized the 2nd European Union-Lao PDR Higher Education Policy and Cooperation Roadshow in Vientiane on Nov 15.

The purpose of the event is to provide a platform for discussion and the exchange of views between Laos and the EU, including EU members, on how to improve the quality of higher education, to strengthen exchanges and cooperation, and to promote study and training opportunities in Europe.

The event was a series of the EU higher education roadshows, which have been already been organized at universities in Luang Prabang, Savannakhet and Champassak Provinces drawing almost 1,000 students in total.

“The EU-Lao PDR Higher Education Roadshow is important to enhancing educational exchanges and contacts between Laos and Europe. Through people-to-people contacts and academic exchanges, Laos and Europe will get to know each other better and work closer together,” said Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Lao PDR Leo Faber.

“This event will be a good chance for Lao students interested in studying in the European Union to speak directly with representatives of universities from EU countries,” said Minister of Education and Sports Sengdeuane Lachanthaboune.

“After three events in the provinces and this one in Vientiane, I hope to see an increasing number of EU-Laos Partnership Projects under the Erasmus Plus Programme and more students from Laos going to Europe for their studies. And of course more European staff and students would be also able to come for exchanges in Laos,” said Mr Leo Faber.

“As quality education is a driver of strong and sustainable development, economic growth, and a vital element in the fight against poverty, the EU stands ready to help Laos strengthen the capacity of its human resources for Laos’ integration process into regional economic communities and the world economy,” Mr Faber said.

During the event, participants shared their experiences on higher education and discussed the priorities of higher education in the Lao PDR, the regional and international integration of higher education, and cooperation between EU and Lao universities.

Study in Europe opportunities under the framework of the EU Erasmus Plus, Campus France, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and United Kingdom Embassy’s Chevening Scholarship were also presented.

Since 2004, more than 250 students from Laos have been granted scholarships from the European Union Erasmus Mundus Programme to further their studies at various levels ranging from professional trainings, bachelor and master, to doctorate degrees in the European Union.

EU member states such as the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg and United Kingdom also regularly provide scholarships to students from Laos.
