(KPL)  More than 100 personnel have been mobilized to combat a fast-moving forest fire in Thaphabat District, as authorities race to contain the blaze amid harsh weather conditions.

The operation, led by the Forestry Department of Laos in coordination with provincial and local authorities, targeted fire outbreaks in Ban Na Xay and Ban Xaysavang within the protected national park area.

Firefighting teams included military personnel from Special Training School 303 of the Lao People’s Armed Forces, forestry officials, and local villagers, reflecting a large-scale, multi-agency response.

Officials confirmed that two major fire points have been successfully contained. However, several smaller hotspots remain active due to extreme heat, dry conditions, and strong winds, which continue to hamper suppression efforts.

Authorities have now shifted to round-the-clock monitoring, deploying teams to track fire movement and prevent further spread. Plans are also underway to establish firebreaks to contain the remaining hotspots and protect surrounding forest areas.

The incident underscores growing concerns over forest fires during the dry season, particularly in ecologically sensitive zones like Phou Khao Khouay, one of Laos’ key biodiversity conservation areas.
