The government convened its ordinary meeting for January–February 2026 on February 24 at the Prime Minister’s Office, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
The one-and-a-half-day session brought together deputy prime ministers, cabinet members, and senior representatives from ministries and state agencies to review progress and set priorities for the months ahead.Held shortly after the successful election of members of the 10th National Assembly and the 5th Provincial People’s Councils, the meeting marked an important step in shaping the policy direction of the new legislative and administrative term. Discussions focused on strategic planning, institutional reforms, and urgent national issues requiring coordinated action.Central to the agenda was the draft statement of the Prime Minister on the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026–2030), which will serve as the country’s principal development framework over the next five years. The cabinet also reviewed the draft 10-year National Socio-Economic Development Strategy (2026–2035) and the national Vision 2055, reaffirming a long-term commitment to sustainable growth, resilience, and greater economic self-reliance.Participants assessed progress in addressing land subsidence in Ban Thongmang, Xaythany District, Vientiane, and examined the performance of the tourism sector in 2025, along with policy measures to further stimulate tourism development. The implementation of Resolution No. 08/PM on the promotion of electric vehicle use was also reviewed, with additional directions proposed to accelerate the transition to cleaner and more sustainable transport.Legal and regulatory reforms featured prominently in the deliberations. The cabinet considered draft decrees on the transport of dangerous goods by road and rail, and on international non-governmental organizations, aimed at enhancing regulatory clarity, public safety, and effective governance.In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Sonexay highlighted the increasingly complex regional and global environment, characterized by geopolitical tensions, economic and trade disputes, and other uncertainties. He emphasized the need for close monitoring, timely responses, and coordinated implementation to mitigate potential impacts on livelihoods and national development.The meeting underscored the government’s resolve to strengthen policy coherence, advance structural reforms, and sustain socio-economic progress amid a challenging external landscape.
