Also attending were the Secretary of the Champasak Provincial Party Committee, ministers and vice ministers, representatives from southern provinces and Sayabouly Province, along with domestic and international guests and a large number of local residents.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Souksavanh Vilayvong, Chairman of the Champasak Provincial Administration Committee, said the 2026 festival is being held in a joyful atmosphere as the nation celebrates several significant milestones, including the successful convening of the 12th National Party Congress, preparations for the election of the 10th National Assembly and the 5th Provincial People’s Assemblies, and the 25th anniversary of Wat Phou Champasak’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized on December 16, 2001.
The Wat Phou Champasak Festival is held annually on the 15th day of the third lunar month with the aim of preserving ancient traditions, promoting local socio-economic development, boosting tourism, and generating income for local communities. Dating back to the 7th century, Wat Phou stands as one of the most important historical and cultural landmarks of the Lao nation.
This year’s festival features a wide range of activities, including a grand opening show with a spectacular light, color, and sound performance, highlighted by a 590-drone light display illustrating the history of Wat Phou and a 250-round fireworks show. Other activities include trade exhibitions showcasing local and commercial products, traditional sports competitions, cultural music and dance performances, and exhibitions of local cuisine from Champasak District.
In addition, a scientific seminar is being held to mark the 25-year journey of Wat Phou as a World Heritage Site. Religious activities include prayers, Dhamma talks, and chanting ceremonies throughout the night of February 1, 2026, followed by a large-scale almsgiving ceremony involving hundreds of monks on the morning of February 2, 2026.
The opening ceremony concluded with senior leaders pressing the ceremonial button to officially launch the festival, followed by a stunning drone light display that captivated all attendees.
