(KPL) President Thongloun Sisoulith has successfully concluded his official visit to the Russian Federation, conducted from July 30 to August 1, 2025, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This visit marked President Thongloun’s first official trip to Russia since assuming office and carried symbolic significance in reinforcing the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Russia.

During his visit, President Thongloun held official talks with President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders reviewed the current state of bilateral and multilateral cooperation and expressed satisfaction with the growing partnership between the two countries.

Both sides highlighted their mutual understanding and assistance as the foundation of the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

President Thongloun expressed his gratitude for Russia’s continued support, particularly in human resource development.

He acknowledged the growing number of scholarships offered to Lao students and appreciated Russia’s assistance in constructing the Laos-Russia Friendship School in Vientiane. He also extended thanks for other valuable contributions made by Russia toward the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR.

The two sides agreed to further enhance cooperation in key areas such as political-security, national defense, trade, investment, education, and tourism. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between Laos and Russia and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two Parties, governments, and peoples to generate tangible benefits and ensure long-term regional stability.

President Thongloun also extended his congratulations to Russia on the successful commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, celebrated on May 9, 2025. He noted that Laos and Russia will jointly organize events later this year to mark the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The discussions were held in a constructive and friendly atmosphere, reflecting the close ties between the two nations. President Thongloun extended an invitation to President Putin to visit Laos at a convenient time.

In addition to his official engagements, President Thongloun met with Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the United Russia Party, and received a courtesy call from the Chairman of the Russia-Laos Friendship Association. He also visited Herzen University in St. Petersburg, where he studied during the Soviet era, and signed a portrait to be displayed there.

Furthermore, President Thongloun visited the Danilov Monastery, where he was awarded an honorary medal and the Order of Merit (First Class) by the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. He also toured Patriot Park, a military museum and church complex.
