(KPL)In 2024, Laos and Australia are celebrating 70 years since the first Lao students went to Australia to study under the Colombo Plan.  Both governments have reaffirmed their partnership on human resource development to ensure the Lao PDR has the skills, knowledge, policies and plans it needs for sustainable and inclusive social and economic development.

Now in the tenth year of implementation, the Laos Australia Institute delivers scholarships, short courses and trainings, technical advice, policy development advice, and support for government organisations, including offering opportunities for strategic and regional engagement.

At its annual meeting on 15 March, the Laos Australia Institute Steering Committee discussed Australia’s investment in human resource development in Laos and areas for future support, especially throughout Laos’ ASEAN chair year. The meeting was co-chaired by the Minister of Education and Sports  Phouth Simmalavong and the Australian Ambassador Megan Jones.

The Steering Committee includes representatives from Australia and the Government of Laos.  The Committee provides a forum for joint decision making and determining priorities to guide the work of the Laos Australia Institute.

As Co-chair for the Committee, Minister of Education and Sports  Phouth Simmalavong said “Australia’s human resource development support has been significant in developing and strengthening human resources to contribute to the sustainable socio-economic development of Laos, and in facilitating the opportunity for regional cooperation.

Speaking at the meeting, Australian Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Megan Jones said that the Steering Committee “plays a critical role in making sure that our investments are aligned with the priorities of the Government of Laos and achieving effective and efficient outcomes.”

Ms Jones further remarked “Australia aims to be a trusted and reliable partner for the Lao PDR, as we have been for the last 72 years of our bilateral relationship. One of our top priorities is investing in human resource development to ensure Laos has the skills and knowledge it needs for sustainable and inclusive social and economic development.”

This year, the Laos Australia Institute will work to support the Lao Government’s implementation of the National Human Resource Development Strategy and continue to upgrade the English Language for Government Officials teaching curriculum.
