Vientiane’s five districts to become foodstuff production sources

KPL The 8th five year socio-economic development plan 2016-2020 has assigned the five districts of Naxaythong, Xaythany, Hadxayfong, Sangthong and Pak Ngum in Vientiane Capital to produce rice, fruit, vegetables, to plant pastures and engage in animal husbandry. The five districts will be places for the production of foodstuffs in response to demand from the domestic market and for export.

(KPL) The 8th five year socio-economic development plan 2016-2020 has assigned the five districts of Naxaythong, Xaythany, Hadxayfong, Sangthong and Pak Ngum in Vientiane Capital to produce rice, fruit, vegetables, to plant pastures and engage in animal husbandry.

The five districts will be places for the production of foodstuffs in response to demand from the domestic market and for export.

The Vientiane Agriculture and Forestry Department held a meeting on 8 April to discuss an action plan for the 8th five year socio-economic development plan 2016-2020 and an agriculture development strategy through 2025 in central and local provinces.

The Director of the Agriculture and Forestry Department, Mr Linkham Douangsavanh said that the plan guarantees sustainable food, crops, and rice during the rainy season and animal husbandry based on districts’ potential in accordance with market-oriented agriculture and industrial procession that are in response to demand from both domestic and overseas markets.

The project is to focus on the production of both organic and clean agriculture according to irrigation projects such as the Nam Houm and Nam Xuang reservoirs.

Under the plan from 2016 to 2020, the districts will produce 372,200 tonnes of rice per year on a total area of 77,800 ha, and 125,200 tonnes of cash crops per year on 11,700 ha. The plan aims to grow grass on 600 ha for animal husbandry and expects to produce around 1,200 tonnes of beef, pork, fish and poultry per year.

The meeting also discussed the next five-year plan for agriculture and forestry development in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr Phoungparisack Pravongviengkham, the Vientiane Vice Mayor Anouphab Tounalom, and authorities from both the Vientiane Agriculture and Forestry Department and the Sam Sang or three-build districts, and relevant officials.
