KPL The Lao government has launched an on-site investigation into a land subsidence incident in Vilabouli District, Savannakhet Province, following the circulation of images on social media showing sinkholes in the area.

According to preliminary findings, the incident occurred on the morning of July 9 in Nong Kadeng Village, where authorities identified eight sinkholes in a water canal and nearby rice fields. The sinkholes measure approximately 2 to 4 meters in diameter.
Initial assessments by technical authorities indicate that the subsidence was caused by a natural geological process. Officials said the area is underlain by limestone formations that have gradually been eroded by underground water over many years, creating cavities beneath the surface. Recent heavy rainfall is believed to have triggered the collapse.
Authorities noted that similar subsidence occurred in the same area about four to five years ago and said the latest incident resembles the sinkhole reported in Thongkhanoy Village, Hinboun District, Khammouane Province, in May 2026.
Officials also confirmed that the incident was not related to mining activities operating in the area.
A provincial technical team is working with district authorities and project operators to conduct a detailed geological assessment, collect additional data, and evaluate safety conditions in the affected area.
The government has urged the public to rely on official information and avoid spreading unverified reports on social media. Authorities said they will continue monitoring the situation closely and provide updates as the investigation progresses.
