(KPL) A meeting to review and approve the content of the Lao Language Dictionary is being held from April 22–24, 2026, at the Research Institute for Educational Sciences (RIES).
The event is attended by Dalavone Kittiphan, Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, and Phankham Viphavanh, advisor to the Lao Dictionary Research and Compilation Committee. Former Party and state leaders, committee members, representatives from ministries and equivalent organizations, Buddhist monks, experts, and other stakeholders are also participating.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Dalavone highlighted that the dictionary represents a crucial step in preserving and developing the Lao language into a unified national standard. He noted that it will serve as an authoritative reference for future generations.
The dictionary is the result of extensive research initiated in 2022 and has undergone multiple stages of analysis, editing, and refinement. The current draft contains more than 1,200 pages, including detailed appendices.
Dr. Phankham emphasized that the dictionary goes beyond vocabulary compilation, reflecting the etymology, history, and cultural identity of the Lao people. He noted that a strong linguistic foundation is essential for national development.
Participants at the meeting are exchanging views to further enhance accuracy and consistency before final approval. The completion of the dictionary is expected to mark a significant milestone in preserving the Lao language and establishing modern linguistic standards aligned with contemporary needs.
