(KPL) Authorities in Bolikhamxay Province have launched a feasibility study for a department store and integrated service complex at the Pakxan–Bueng Kan border area of the 5th Friendship Bridge, marking a new step in strengthening cross-border economic cooperation.

The initiative was formalized on January 15, 2026, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Bolikhamxay Provincial Administration and BM Import-Export Sole Co., Ltd. at the Provincial Finance Department. The agreement was signed by Mr. Xay-amphone Sihavong, Member of the Provincial Party Committee and supervisor of provincial investment affairs, and Mr. Khonsavanh Sonkhamxay, President of BM Import-Export Sole Co., Ltd., in the presence of senior provincial leaders and representatives from relevant departments.

The planned development, located at Zone 1 of the border checkpoint of the 5th Friendship Bridge, is expected to transform the Pakxan–Bueng Kan gateway into a vibrant commercial hub serving travelers, traders, and local communities on both sides of the Lao–Thai border.

Under the MoU, a 12-month study and survey period will be carried out from the date of signing to assess investment feasibility, design options, and overall development potential. The project envisions not only a modern department store but also a range of supporting facilities designed to accommodate entrepreneurs, service providers, and investors.

Provincial authorities noted that the project will open opportunities for private sector participation, allowing interested business operators to take part in the joint development of commercial and service facilities. Once implemented, the project is expected to enhance border services, stimulate trade and tourism, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the economic role of the 5th Friendship Bridge as a key link between Laos and Thailand.

The feasibility study represents an important step toward unlocking the full potential of the border area and positioning Bolikhamxay Province as an emerging hub for cross-border commerce and investment.
