12th National Games of Laos Conclude with Grand Ceremony in Vientiane

KPL The 12th National Games of the Lao PDR officially concluded on November 25 with a grand closing ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Vientiane Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone, President of the Lao National Olympic Committee and representatives from various relevant authorities.

In his speech, Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone, who also chaired the Organizing Committee for the Games, emphasized the significance of the event, noting that it reflected the great care and expectations of the Party, State, and people for the future and development of Laos' sports sector. “This event has united our nation through the power of sport, reinforcing the principles of unity and national pride,” Mayor Atsaphangthong said.

Vientiane athletes dominated the competition, topping the medal tally with 109 gold, 91 silver, and 119 bronze medals.

They were followed by the Ministry of National Defense, which secured 68 gold, 44 silver, and 57 bronze medals.

Khammuan Province came in third with 56 gold, 41 silver, and 77 bronze medals. Svannakhet Province won 41 gold, 55 silver, and 54 bronze medals, while Champassak finished fifth with 28 gold, 44 silver, and 54 bronze medals.

Held from November 15-25, the Games were themed “United, Disciplined, Transparent, Developed,” underscoring their role in promoting national unity, sportsmanship, and excellence.

This year’s National Games were particularly special, as they marked the third time Vientiane has hosted the event since it inaugurated the games in 1985.

At the closing ceremony, it was announced that Champasak Province would host the 13th National Games in 2028, with the province receiving the symbolic torch to mark the start of preparations for the next edition.

The National Games, which take place every three years, rotate among Laos’ provinces. The 11th edition was hosted by Xieng Khuang Province in 2022.

Beyond showcasing the country’s athletic talent, the Games play a crucial role in promoting physical fitness, social cohesion, and community engagement.

As the ceremony came to a close, athletes and officials celebrated not only the achievements of the Games but also the values they represent. With the 12th National Games now behind them, all eyes are on the future, as the spirit of competition and unity continues to thrive across Laos.
