(KPL) The upgrade of the Vientiane Bus Station is scheduled to be completed in two years, according to the Director General of the Vientiane Bus State Enterprise, Mr. Khamphoun Temelath.
“The Vientiane Bus Station has been designed by the Japanese company Nikken Sekkei to be a 12-storey terminal. The cost of the project is US$47.5 million,” said Mr. Khamphoun.
“The upgrade started in June 2015 and is expected to take around three years to complete,” said Mr. Khamphoun.
One of the objectives of the improvement of the station is to attract and encourage more people to use public buses in the future to combat the worsening traffic congestion in Vientiane Capital.
Mr Khamphoun Temelath said that he believes that once the bus network is upgraded, more people will use public buses.
The rapid socio-economic growth in Vientiane Capital has caused a surge in the number of vehicles on the roads. In 2010, there were only 1.4 million vehicles registered nationwide.
Currently, there are over 604,600 vehicles registered in Vientiane Capital alone with the number of vehicles on the road increasing by 15 per cent per year on average.
