(KPL) Preparations are underway for the 12th National Games, scheduled to take place in 2025, as the National Steering Committee launched its first official meeting on November 26 at the Vientiane Administrative Office.

The meeting was chaired by Vientiane Mayor and President of the 12th National Sports Festival, Atsaphangthong Siphandone, along with Minister of Education and Sports Phut Simmalavong.

Vientiane Deputy Mayor Phouvong Vongkhamsao addressed the gathering, expressing the city’s pride in hosting the festival. He emphasized the event’s role in promoting Lao culture and traditions through a diverse range of sporting competitions involving provinces, the capital, and various ministries.

“The festival aims to develop national sports, encourage physical activity, and foster unity among all ethnic groups in Laos,” said Mr. Phouvong. He added that the event would contribute to improving both physical and mental well-being, support socio-economic development, and strengthen the nation’s human resources. The festival also seeks to instill discipline and camaraderie among youth and citizens, while addressing social challenges.

In preparation for the games, a survey of potential venues for the opening and closing ceremonies and various competitions was conducted on June 13, 2024, by the Department of Education and Sports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports’ technical team.

The survey highlighted significant infrastructure issues, including poor conditions at the indoor stadium and Buildings A and B at the National Stadium (Km 16). Officials noted that while repair work is urgently needed, the budget for these renovations remains undetermined.

An initial estimate for hosting the games stands at 209.43 billion kip, but further discussions are required to finalize funding for the necessary repairs. Relevant committees will proceed with budget calculations and planning once agreements on venue decorations and logistics are reached.

The 12th National Games are expected to be a landmark event, bringing together athletes and participants from across Laos to celebrate sports, culture, and unity.
