At the 14th ASEAN-United Nations Summit held in Vientiane on Oct 11, leaders expressed deep appreciation for the steady growth of ASEAN-UN relations over the past 47 years, encompassing cooperation across political-security, economic, and socio-cultural areas.
The meeting emphasized the importance of promoting complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing ASEAN-UN relations for peace, stability, sustainable development, and multilateralism.
Looking ahead, Prime Minister of Laos Sonexay Siphandone encouraged the development of a new ASEAN-UN Plan of Action for 2026-2030 to continue advancing the ASEAN-UN Comprehensive Partnership and support the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which is set for adoption in 2025.
ASEAN leaders also commended the success of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the Summit of the Future, held in New York in September 2024.
The UN remains one of ASEAN’s key partners, with a history of long-standing cooperation. ASEAN-UN relations were established in 1977 and elevated to a Comprehensive Partnership in 2011.
