(KPL) Leaders from ASEAN, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, the Russian Federation, and the United States met in Vientiane on Oct 11 for the 19th East Asia Summit.

The summit, chaired by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, also welcomed the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste as an observer.

Discussions centered on reviewing EAS cooperation and implementing the EAS Work Plan 2024-2028, with a focus on key strategic areas including energy and environmental sustainability, public health, natural disaster management, economic resilience, supply chain connectivity, and digital transformation.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ASEAN Centrality and underscored the East Asia Summit’s role as the premier leaders-led forum for strategic, political, and economic dialogue. The summit aimed to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and globally, in line with ASEAN’s core principles.

President of the European Council and the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) attended the event as Guests of the Chair, offering briefings on initiatives to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration.

Established in 2005, the East Asia Summit (EAS) remains the only regional forum that brings together leaders from diverse nations across the region for dialogue and constructive cooperation to address emerging challenges.
