(KPL) Producing and exporting valuable wood products sourced from well-managed forests and plantationsis the key to economic progress in the Lao PDR. The increasing demand for timber products in Europe offers numerous opportunities, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Thus, by boosting export activities can further stimulate the growth of the local wood processing sector, bringing economic and social benefits to the region.
With this view, the Department of Forestry (DOF), Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC), unveiled the Export Guide on High Value-Added Wood Products on Thursday during a workshop hosted at the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI). The workshop, overseen by experts from ITC, attracted participation from various public and private stakeholders and centered around the content of the export guide.
At the workshop, companies and business support organisations received training on the critical details necessary for initiating or expanding export operations targeted at European Union (EU) markets. This encompassed an in-depth understanding of both tariff and non-tariff measures, as well as EU's decisions, directives, and regulations, along with insights into wood product categories with high export potential. Additionally, the workshop clarified product-specific requirements, such as EU procedures for treating wooden packaging to mitigate pest transmission and manage packaging-related risks.
“This guide arrives at a crucial juncture, providing Lao SMEs with invaluable guidance for quickly understanding and effectively managing the wide-ranging market entry prerequisites, which include both regulatory obligations and voluntary standards,” Deputy Director of Timber and NTFPs Business Management Division, Department of Forestry, Mr. Chanthakhad Souphida stated.
“Comprehensive insight and training provided at the workshop today will help the wood processing industry grow, resulting in economic and social benefits for the region. ARISE Plus project is proud to have supported the development of this guide, fostering inclusive economic growth and enhancing trade engagement in global value chains within specific sectors,” said Khankeo Moonvong, ARISE Plus Lao PDR Project Coordinator, International Trade Centre.
Both newcomers and experienced small and medium-sized enterprises can benefit from this guide. It offers a valuable resource for those entering export markets for the first time and for those with prior experience who aim to expand and diversify their export strategies. This diversification might encompass partnerships with other companies, specializing in production, outsourcing, or altering the types of materials used.
The ARISE Plus programme, funded by the EU, offered technical assistance for the development of the export guide. Within the Lao component of the programme, ITC is working with the Lao government to enhance the business environment, with a particular emphasis on regional economic integration and enhancing trade and engagement in global value chains within specific sectors. The program's objectives include fostering inclusive economic growth, enhancing resilience to climate change, reducing vulnerability, and promoting job creation.
