(KPL) Consulate of Oudomxay province has begun issuing passports for people in the northern provinces including Oudomxay, Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Phongsaly and other neighbouring provinces with 50-70 passports issued a day.

The opening of the consulate in the northern province helps people save time and money in applying for passports unlike in the past when they needed to travel to Vientiane to apply for their new passports.

Yet the consulate’s staff currently finds it difficult to interview applicants because some of them are tribal people who cannot speak and understand Lao language properly.

“In the past, when we wanted to apply for a new passport, we had to go to Vientiane which took several days and we had to spend a lot of money. Everyday many people applied for passports so we needed to wait in a long queue, but now with consulate opened in Oudomxay province we can apply for passports easily. It is convenient for people in Oudomxay and other northern provinces,” said Mr Neng, a Nasenkham villager in Xay district, Oudomxay province.
