(KPL) During the first six months of this fiscal year, Bokeo Province exported over 100,000 tonnes of banana to China worth 420 billion kip (almost US$52 million) out of a total export volume of 450 billion kip.
Bananas made up the largest export of the province accounting for almost 95% of its exports.
Bokeo Province has the fourth Laos-Thailand Friendship Bridge, which gives the province high potential for trade.
Currently, Bokeo Province has forbidden the expansion of banana plantations and has canceled investments in banana plantations for environmental reasons.
Bokeo is located in the northern part of Laos and covers over 6,000 square kilometers. 70% of total area in the province is mountainous. Bokeo Province has five districts including Houayxay, Tonpheung, Pha-oudom, Paktha and Meuang and has a total population of 170,000.
The Bokeo Industry and Commerce Division reported that during first six months of this year, the volume of imports to Bokeo reached US$20 million. The amount of imports was 48% lower than expected because there was a decline in the number of construction projects and therefore, there was a decrease in the need for imports.
The volume of goods crossing the border reached about US$120 million, US$60 million of which was foodstuff, US$40 million was agricultural and animal products, and about US$18 million was fuel.
Currently, there are over 11,000 ha of banana plantations, with the largest area being a Chinese investment in Tonphueng district.
