(KPL) The Luang Namtha Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport has announced the temporary closure of National Route 13 North from the Oudomxay provincial border to the Boten-China border following severe flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall on August 29, 2026.
Several hours of heavy rain caused the Thoung River and other waterways to rise rapidly, flooding sections of the highway. Landslides, mudflows and fallen trees have blocked roads and bridges, causing severe damage and completely disrupting traffic along the affected section.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast to continue over the next one to two days, raising concerns about further flooding and landslides.
The provincial department said clearing and repair work will take time but contractors have been instructed to accelerate operations and reopen the route as soon as conditions permit.
The public is advised to avoid traveling on the affected route. Freight truck operators and other drivers are requested to park in designated spacious areas along the Nateuy-Oudomxay and Luang Namtha-Nateuy corridors without obstructing traffic.
Drivers are also strictly prohibited from overtaking and are urged to cooperate with road repair teams to ensure safe and efficient restoration work.
