Vice Minister of Education and Sports Mrs Daravone Kittiphanh and Megan Jones, Australia’s Ambassador to the Lao PDR, bid farewell to 22 recipients of the Australia Awards Scholarships. The awardees will study at universities across Australia in a range of fields, including Environmental Management, Public Health, Public Policy, Education and Economics.
“Receiving this scholarship is a great honour for both you and your families. Therefore, dedicate yourselves fully to your studies and research so that you can bring back new knowledge, technology and experience to contribute to the development of our country,” Vice Minister Daravone said.
“We have provided scholarships to women and men from across all sectors and backgrounds, including both government and non-government employees, to study in various fields at our world-class educational institutions,” Ambassador Jones said. “Australia is proud to be one of Laos’ longest-standing partners, and the Australia Awards Scholarship programme has been a key feature of this relationship for more than 70 years.”
Australian Government scholarships aim to strengthen technical expertise and leadership capacity in Laos. This group includes 20 Australia Awards Scholarships and two scholarships awarded through the Mekong-Australia Partnership (MAP) programme.
Today, there are more than 1,500 Australia Awards alumni who have returned from their studies to take on leadership roles across the community, including senior positions in government and business. They join a wider network of more than 2,600 alumni across Laos who have studied and trained in Australia over many decades.
Australia Awards and Mekong-Australia Partnership Scholarships are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders. The scholarships provide Lao citizens with the opportunity to obtain qualifications at Master’s, PhD, or Vocational Education and Training level at Australian institutions.
