KPL The Embassy of Vietnam in the Lao PDR, in collaboration with the Lao Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Vietnam Cultural Center in Laos and the Vietnam Water Puppetry Theatre, organized a Vietnamese water puppet performance in Vientiane Capital on Oct 28.

The event was graced by Ms. Darlany Phommavongsa, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of Laos, Mr. Phonxavanh Somphaxay, Deputy Minister of Public Security, and Mr. Nguyen Minh Tam, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos, along with numerous distinguished guests, students, and young audiences, also attended.

Established in March 1956 under the instruction of President Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnam Water Puppetry Theatre operates under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Vietnam. Over its 70 years of development, the theatre has become the largest water puppetry art center in Vietnam. It has performed in more than 70 countries, playing an important role in promoting Vietnamese cultural heritage to international audiences.

This special performance marked the theatre’s return to Laos after nearly five decades—since the 1970s—offering Lao audiences and the Vietnamese community in Laos the opportunity to once again experience the beauty and tradition of Vietnamese water puppetry.

Beyond its artistic significance, the event served as a bridge for cultural exchange, underscoring the deep-rooted friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between the peoples of Vietnam and Laos. Through this performance, the organizers celebrated the vibrancy of national culture and highlighted its vital role in strengthening the special relationship between the two neighboring nations.
