On September 1, 2025, following the participation of President Thongloun Sisoulith at the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane held a working meeting with Mr. Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary-General of the SCO.

(KPL) On September 1, 2025, following the participation of President Thongloun Sisoulith at the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane held a working meeting with Mr. Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary-General of the SCO.
During the meeting, the Lao side expressed sincere appreciation to the SCO and its member states for supporting the Lao PDR’s admission as a Dialogue Partner. The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of the SCO’s role in promoting peace, security, and development, and reaffirmed Laos’ readiness to actively contribute within the framework of SCO cooperation.
The SCO Secretary-General welcomed Laos as a new Dialogue Partner and expressed satisfaction with the country’s active engagement. He also briefed the Lao delegation on the scope of cooperation under the SCO framework.
Both sides agreed to initiate consultations on priority areas for future cooperation, with a view to drafting memoranda of understanding in fields such as political and security cooperation, socio-economic development, sustainable development, and infrastructure connectivity. In particular, they highlighted the Laos-China Railway as a strategic project that can help transform Laos from a landlocked to a land-linked country, enhancing regional integration across the Eurasian continent.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of both parties to peace, friendship, and cooperation for development in the region and beyond.
