(KPL/Prensa Latina) Investing in teaching is a strategic decision for development, said Valtencir Mendes, Chief of Education at the UNESCO Regional Office in this capital, who is participating on Friday in the world summit on the issue.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Mendes explained that investing in teachers’ training is highly profitable because we are developing a country’s talent.

Every dollar earmarked for education can generate up to 15 dollars in economic growth, the official from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) stated.

UNESCO, along with the Chilean government, convened a summit in this capital to address the challenge of the teacher shortage, the causes of this problem, and the need to valorize the profession in a challenging global, economic, and sociopolitical context.

Mendes stated that when the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must be met by 2030, Latin America and the Caribbean will have a teacher shortage of 3.2 million.

The plan also calls for preparing teachers for future challenges, such as digitalization, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the construction of more inclusive and equitable education systems.

The UNESCO official remembered the words of Gabriela Mistral, an educator and Nobel Prize winner in Literature, when she stated: “Children’s future is today. Tomorrow will be too late.”
