Authorities have announced that the expressway connecting Vientiane and Vang Vieng will be temporarily closed to accommodate a mini marathon event on 20 December 2025.
The marathon is being organized to welcome the New Year 2026 and to celebrate several key milestones, including the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic on 2 December, the 105th birth anniversary of President Kaysone Phomvihane, and the 5th anniversary of the operation of the Vientiane–Vang Vieng Expressway. The event will run from 04:00 to 12:00 on 20 December.
For the safety of participants and road users, the expressway will be closed between the Vientiane toll station and the Naxon toll station starting at 17:00 on 19 December and reopening at 12:00 on 20 December. Travellers planning to commute between Vientiane and Vang Vieng in either direction are advised to use the Naxon toll station to enter or exit the expressway ahead of time.
Authorities have urged motorists to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience and ensure the safety of all participants.
