(KPL) Laos’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Technology and Communications have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at accelerating the digital modernisation of the foreign affairs sector.

The agreement was signed on 5 December at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane and Technology and Communications Minister Boviengkham Vongdara, with senior officials from both sides in attendance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Thongsavanh said digital transformation is essential to improving government performance and aligns with the country’s long-term digital economy vision and development strategies. He noted that modern information technology is becoming a key driver of national development and an important tool for strengthening economic diplomacy.

Mr Boviengkham emphasised the need for government bodies to adopt digital systems to enhance efficiency, security and service delivery. He called on officials to strengthen their digital skills, including the use of artificial intelligence, which he said now plays a significant role in public administration.

Under the agreement, the two ministries will collaborate on developing digital government platforms, including e-Office and internal communication systems, while improving digital infrastructure to support secure and efficient operations.

Officials say the initiative will help modernise the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ administrative systems and support the implementation of Laos’ foreign policy and economic diplomacy goals.
