(KPL) The Lao People's Democratic Republic celebrated the 58th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN (8 August 1967 – 8 August 2025) and the 28th anniversary of Lao PDR’s accession to ASEAN (23 July 1997 – 23 July 2025) with a flag-raising ceremony held on July 28 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane.

The event was presided over by Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and attended by ministers from the three ASEAN Community pillars, deputy ministers, ambassadors of ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste, senior officials from relevant ministries, and representatives from various government departments.

In his address, Minister Thongsavanh emphasized the significance of ASEAN and its achievements over the past 58 years, particularly in promoting regional cooperation and dialogue. He noted that ASEAN, with its central role in the regional architecture, has grown into a cohesive and resilient community that plays a vital part in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and globally.

Highlighting a major milestone, the Minister noted that ASEAN will officially welcome Timor-Leste as a full member this year, further reinforcing ASEAN’s inclusive and dynamic character.

He also underscored Lao PDR’s active and high-level contributions to ASEAN since its accession in 1997, including the fulfillment of its obligations, which have yielded tangible benefits for the Lao nation and people. Looking forward, the country is committed to advancing ASEAN’s development through the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, the strategic plans of the three pillars, and the ASEAN Connectivity Strategy.

Minister Thongsavanh recalled Lao PDR’s successful Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2024—its third time leading the regional bloc—under the theme “Enhancing ASEAN Connectivity and Resilience”. He stated that this achievement significantly elevated the country's profile both regionally and internationally.

The Minister also expressed strong support for Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, which will be held under the theme “Inclusive and Sustainable Participation.”

On behalf of the government, Minister Thongsavanh extended his sincere appreciation to ministries, sectors, the private sector, and people across the country for their contributions to ASEAN affairs. He also thanked ASEAN member states, dialogue partners, external partners, and international organizations for their continued cooperation and support, particularly during Lao PDR’s 2024 Chairmanship.

Following the opening speech, the national anthem of Lao PDR and the ASEAN anthem were performed by the Lao People's Army Band, as the ASEAN flag was raised alongside the Lao national flag, symbolizing the nation’s enduring commitment to regional unity and collaboration.
