Mr. Chaleun Yiapaoheu, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Laos and President of the Laos-Cuba Friendship Association, on Jul 25 warmly received Mr. Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, and his delegation during their official visit to Laos and other Asian nations.

(KPL) Mr. Chaleun Yiapaoheu, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Laos and President of the Laos-Cuba Friendship Association, on Jul 25 warmly received Mr. Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, and his delegation during their official visit to Laos and other Asian nations.
Mr. Chaleun expressed his delight at the visit, praising it as a significant contribution to deepening the "time-honored friendship" between the two Parties, governments, and peoples of Laos and Cuba.
He extended sincere gratitude for Cuba’s historic support in Laos’ liberation struggle and current nation-building efforts, while also commending Cuba’s achievements in socio-economic development and safeguarding its revolutionary legacy over the past 60 years.
Celebrating 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties
The meeting highlighted recent milestones in Laos’ development under the 11th Party Congress resolutions, as well as joint activities by the Laos-Cuba Friendship Association and the Cuban Embassy in Laos.
Notably, the two sides marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (November 4, 1974–2024) with ceremonies in Houaphanh Province.
Other events included essay contests and cultural programs at the Laos-Cuba Friendship Secondary School in Dongbang and the National University of Laos, honoring Cuban national hero José Martí.
Strengthening Future Collaboration
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in politics, education, agriculture, healthcare, and other shared priorities.
Mr. Peñalver applauded Laos’ progress under the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party’s leadership, which has improved living standards and elevated Laos’ regional and global profile.
The visit follows earlier exchanges, including a Cuban ballet performance led by Ms. Viengxay Valdez and a delegation from Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power, further cementing cultural and diplomatic bonds.
