(KPL) Thousands gathered in Luang Prabang today to witness the annual procession of the sacred Phra Bang Buddha image, marking the Lao New Year celebration. The revered image was moved from its usual shrine at the National Museum to Wat Mai Souvannaphoummaram, allowing the public to pay respects and perform traditional water blessings.

President Thongloun Sisoulith led the ceremony, joined by senior officials, monks, and local residents. A grand procession featuring traditional music, dancers, monks, and ceremonial guards escorted the Buddha image through the city.

The Phra Bang image will remain at Wat Mai for three days, where visitors can continue to offer blessings and watch cultural performances. It will be returned to its original shrine on April 20, concluding the New Year celebrations.

The procession is a key spiritual and cultural event, honoring the ancient traditions of Luang Prabang and uniting communities in prayer and celebration.
