(KPL) Laos' first petroleum refinery, located in the energy and chemical precinct of Saysettha Development Zone, Vientiane, launched its commercial production on Nov 30 in a ceremony attended by Vice Premier and Minister of Planning and Investment Sonexay Siphandone.
Minister of Industry and Commerce Khemmany Pholsena, Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong and relevant officials of Laos and China also attended the ceremony along with former Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad and Acting Governor of China’s Yunnan Province Wang Yubo and relevant officials of both sides.
The US$2-billion refinery is expected to produce on a yearly basis 3 million litres of petroleum products including gasoline, diesel, benzene and liquefied petroleum gas.
The refinery project began in 2015 under Laos-China Dongyan Petrochemical with Yunnan Dongyan Industrial holding a 75 per cent share, Lao State Fuel taking a 20 per cent stake and Lao-China Joint Investment owning a 5 per cent stake.
“This petroleum refinery project will help reduce fuel imports and cut oil prices in domestic market,” said Ms Khemmany Pholsena.
