(KPL) Friday’s morning witnessed the launch of the reconstruction of Mahosot Hospital, the oldest hospital in Vientiane, which is funded with a financial grant of US$105 million from the Chinese government.
The project is the largest grant project the Chinese government has ever funded in Southeast Asia.
The hospital is designed to be the most modern hospital in the Lao PDR and have 600 beds.
Present at the launching ceremony included Minister of Health Bounkong Sihalath, his deputy Phouthone Meuangpak, the Economic and Trade Councillor of the Chinese Embassy in the Lao PDR Wang Qihui, President of Beijing UNI-Construction Group Wang Bao Shen and relevant officials of the two countries.
Once fully built, the hospital will be able to provide modern medical service to the people, so that it will not be necessary for the Lao people to be treated in neighbouring countries," said Deputy Minister of Health Phouthone Meuangpak.
"Mahosot Hospital project is the most important cooperation project for the two countries in the health sector. China will provide the most modern equipment for this project," said Wang Qihui.
The hospital is expected to be fully built by 2021.
The hospital will be equipped with modern medical technology, and improved staff services will be a focus of the new and upgraded Mahosot.
