The Khan River was diverted to the Nam Khan 2 hydropower barrage on 18 April in the witnesses of Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Somsavat Lengsavad.
General Director of Electricite du Laos, Mr Sisavat Thiravong briefed about the Nam Khan 2 hydropower barrage which is owned by Electricite du Laos under the supervision of the Lao Government.
This project was made possible by a loan from EXIM Bank of China and is worth US$300 million with Sino-Hydropower Corporation of China hired as the contractor to complete the project within 54 months.

(KPL) The Khan River was diverted to the Nam Khan 2 hydropower barrage on 18 April in the witnesses of Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Somsavat Lengsavad.
General Director of Electricite du Laos, Mr Sisavat Thiravong briefed about the Nam Khan 2 hydropower barrage which is owned by Electricite du Laos under the supervision of the Lao Government.

The Nam Khan 2 hydropower barrage project’s reservoir, which covers 5,167 km2, was built with reinforced concrete and can store about 686.2 million cubic metres of water. This barrage has an installation capacity of 130MW.
“During the next five months, the Nam Khan 2 hydropower barrage will be generating electricity as planned,” Mr Sisavat said.
This project is in response to the increasing demand for electricity in the country and especially in the northern provinces. The reservoir can also be developed as a new tourist destination due to its size which will potentially provide additional income for Xieng Ngeun district, Luang Prabang Province, improve people’s livelihoods and eradicate poverty.
The water diversion ceremony for the Nam Khan 2 hydropower dam took place in Xieng Ngeun District, Luang Prabang Province in the presence of Luang Prabang Governor, Mr Khampheng Saysompheng, Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr Soulivong Daravong and relevant officials.
