(KPL) Over 500 Vientiane residents yesterday joined an almsgiving ceremony at Chao Anouvong Park to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the installation of the Chao Anouvong statue, the last King of Lane Xang.
Chao Anouvong memorial statue was installed in 2010 to honor King Chao Anouvong and beautify the park which sits on 14 hectares.
The almsgiving ceremony was attended by 123 monks and 23 Kongbouns (sets of offerings for monks including bedding materials, household utensils, etc.) were offered to the monks in Vientiane by Vice Mayor Mr Keophilavanh Aphaylath and Chief of Chanthaboury district Mr Boualone Vongdalaleng.
The event was organized by authorities of Chanthaboury district in cooperation with the Buddhist Fellowship Organization of Vientiane Capital, Vientiane residents, and the Chao Anouvong Park committee.
Chao Anouvong (1767-1829), or Chao Anou for short, was the last king of the former Lao kingdom of Lane Xang. He ruled from 1805 to 1828 in Vientiane and came to power following his brother’s death. Chao Anouvong had long been an ally of the Thai monarchs against Burmese invaders but unfortunately his accomplishments and support of the Thai kingdom was not well recognized. From 1826 to 1828 Chao Anouvong rebelled against Siam in an attempt to gain independence from Siam.
