KPL ASEAN member states and the Republic of Korea reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in science, technology and innovation (STI) during the 7th Meeting of the ASEAN–Republic of Korea Joint Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation (AKJSTIC-7), held in Vientiane on June 24.

The meeting reviewed the implementation of the ASEAN–Republic of Korea STI Cooperation Work Plan 2025–2027 and explored new initiatives to support innovation-driven growth, digital transformation and sustainable development across the region. Discussions were aligned with the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026–2035 and the ASEAN–Republic of Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan 2026–2030.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. Souksavat Sihapanya, Director General of the Department of Science Management under Laos’ Ministry of Education and Sports and ASEAN Senior Official on Science, Technology and Innovation, said science and innovation have become essential drivers of regional resilience, economic competitiveness and sustainable growth. He noted that ASEAN’s upgraded partnership with the Republic of Korea provides expanded opportunities for collaboration in research, technology transfer and human resource development.
Delegates reviewed progress on existing cooperation programmes and discussed proposed projects in key areas including artificial intelligence, digital transformation, clean energy technologies and scientific capacity building. The meeting also examined initiatives such as the ASEAN–Republic of Korea Digital Transformation and Innovation Framework (KADIF), AI integration, and cooperation on carbon neutrality and biomass-based energy technologies.
Participants agreed that deeper collaboration in science, technology and innovation will strengthen regional connectivity, accelerate knowledge sharing and help address emerging economic and environmental challenges. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing practical partnerships that support inclusive, sustainable and innovation-led development throughout ASEAN.
