The China-ASEAN Film Week opened in Vientiane on September 23, 2026, bringing together filmmakers, cultural officials and audiences from China and Southeast Asia to promote film cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.
(KPL) The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Phakhanxay Sikhanxay, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism; Mr. Chen Yijun, Member of the Standing Committee of the Regional Party Committee and Head of the Publicity Department of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China; Ms. Fang Hong, Chinese Ambassador to Laos; a deputy managing director of Thailand’s Media Development Fund; and representatives from Laos, China and other Southeast Asian countries.
The event also brought together representatives of film regulatory bodies, film industry professionals, scholars, experts, teachers and students.
The opening programme featured cultural and artistic performances by Lao and Chinese artists, followed by a screening of the Chinese film Love Letter to Grandma. The film uses family relationships and traditional cultural elements to portray themes of affection and human connection.
The Film Week features 10 selected films from China and Southeast Asian countries, which will be screened at the cinema of Vientiane Center shopping mall through September 29.
The films explore themes including family and human relationships, modern development and youth, providing audiences with an opportunity to learn about the cultural traditions and contemporary life of participating countries.
Held under the theme “Mountains and Seas Merge, Illuminating the Cinematic Future,” the event is organised by the China Film Association in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Lao PDR and the Publicity Department of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
In addition to film screenings, the programme includes discussions on film cooperation and sharing sessions with filmmakers. The activities aim to expand regional film exchanges, encourage cooperation in filmmaking and joint productions, and strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties between China and Southeast Asia.
The event also provides a platform for filmmakers and industry professionals to exchange experiences and explore opportunities for future cooperation, contributing to greater mutual understanding among the peoples of the region.
