In a significant boost to the local healthcare infrastructure, a ceremony was held on April 28, 2026, at Mittaphab Hospital to mark the official handover of the first phase of the Russian-funded renovation project.

The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Sergei Zhestkii, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Lao PDR. High-level attendees included Mr. Pierre-Yves Jousseaume, Project Manager, alongside representatives from UNOPS Lao PDR, the Ministry of Health, and the hospital’s board of directors and medical staff.

During the event, Dr. Sonexay Latsavong, Director of Mittaphab Hospital, detailed the historical significance of the facility. Originally opened in 1988, the "Lao-Soviet Mittaphab Hospital" has served as a cornerstone of the nation’s medical system for 38 years.

"Due to its long period of service, many sections of the building had significantly deteriorated," Dr. Latsavong noted. "This renovation is essential to modernize the facility and ensure high-quality healthcare services for citizens from both the capital and the provinces."

The project stands as a landmark symbol of the enduring partnership between the governments of Russia and Laos.

The renovation officially broke ground on January 28, 2025. The project is being executed through a four-party collaboration involving UNOPS, the Embassy of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Health and Mittaphab Hospital.

Despite minor delays in specific tasks, project leaders confirmed that regular coordination has kept the modernization efforts on track with the established timeline.

Key Upgrades

The phase completed and handed over during Tuesday's ceremony includes critical infrastructure and life-saving technology including two staff dormitory buildings (A and B) featuring 64 bedrooms, a new two-story ward, a modernized emergency operating room, , new medical gas systems in the ICU and ER, electrical generators, and indoor fire suppression, a C-Arm machine and other essential surgical tools.

The completion of this phase marks a major milestone in ensuring the "Old Building" meets contemporary medical standards, providing a safer and more efficient environment for local patients.
