(KPL) A Lao delegation led by Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the 25th ASEAN–European Union Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held from April 27–28 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

The meeting was co-chaired by Brunei Darussalam and the European Union and brought together ASEAN Foreign Ministers, representatives from all 27 EU member states, and the ASEAN Secretariat.

During the meeting, participants reviewed the progress of ASEAN–EU relations, particularly the implementation of the ASEAN–EU Plan of Action for 2023–2027. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to marking the 50th anniversary of ASEAN–EU cooperation in 2027.

Ministers discussed future directions for cooperation and reiterated their commitment to strengthening collaboration in areas of shared interest. These include expanding trade and economic ties based on multilateral principles, enhancing regional connectivity and integration, and increasing cooperation in energy security and food security.

The meeting also emphasized joint efforts to address climate change and promote sustainable development.

Delegates exchanged views on key regional and international issues of mutual concern. These included the situation in the Middle East and its impact on global energy and food security, as well as challenges related to counter-terrorism, transnational crime, cybersecurity, and online fraud.

At the conclusion of the meeting, participants adopted a Joint Statement outlining shared commitments and future priorities.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Thongsavanh Phomvihane held bilateral discussions with representatives from Vietnam, Philippines, Lithuania, Portugal, Austria, Slovakia, Cyprus, and the European Union.
