On April 27, 2026, in Brunei Darussalam, on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting Mr Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, held a bilateral meeting with Mr Kestutis Budrys Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.

The meeting aimed to further strengthen the friendly relations between the two nations, which have spanned over three decades.

During the meeting, both parties highly valued the existing relationship between Laos and Lithuania. This meeting marks a significant milestone in enhancing diplomatic ties and cooperation established since September 1, 1994. Key points of discussion included Lithuania’s commitment to sharing expertise in sectors where they hold strong potential, promoting more frequent high-level meetings and delegation exchanges between the two countries, encouraging collaborative growth in trade, investment, and tourism, and strengthening cooperation in environmental protection, clean energy, digital transformation, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance to support Laos' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr Thongsavanh Phomvihane, representing the Lao government and its people, expressed sincere gratitude to Lithuania for its valuable assistance provided through European Union (EU) programmes.

This support aligns with the National Socio-Economic Development Plan, particularly in rural development and poverty reduction. Such international cooperation is vital as the Lao PDR prepares to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status during the 2026–2029 period.

Mutual Congratulations

Mr Kestutis Budrys extended his congratulations to DPM Thongsavanh Phomvihane on his recent appointment as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He expressed firm confidence that the bilateral relationship between Laos and Lithuania will continue to flourish and expand.

To formalize and elevate their partnership, the two Ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Bilateral Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
