(KPL) The Vientiane Food State Enterprise said it is ensuring adequate supplies of pork, poultry and beef ahead of the upcoming Lao New Year, with pork prices trending lower than a year earlier, officials said on April 7, 2026.
Khamla Sengdavong, director general of the state enterprise, said slaughterhouses under its management will operate daily throughout the holiday period to maintain a steady flow of meat to markets in the capital.
He said the enterprise is working closely with livestock producers to secure supply despite economic pressures, including rising fuel costs.
Officials said Vientiane currently receives between 800 and 1,000 pigs per day, along with about 4,000 chickens supplied to the market daily.
Pork prices have declined by between 10,000 and 20,000 kip per kilogram compared with the same period last year, reflecting increased domestic production. Prices for beef and poultry remain relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations.
The enterprise said local farmers are facing pressure from high transportation costs and competition from imported pork products, which have contributed to lower farm-gate prices.
Officials said relevant sectors are working to improve management of production, imports and pricing mechanisms to better support domestic producers while ensuring long-term food security.
The enterprise also encouraged consumers to support locally produced goods as part of efforts to strengthen the domestic agricultural sector
