(KPL) Authorities in Laos are stepping up coordination to ensure Lao workers and students overseas can fully exercise their voting rights in the elections for the 10th National Assembly and the 5th Provincial People’s Councils.

The Department of Employment under the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and recruitment agencies to compile verified data on Lao nationals abroad and transmit it to responsible committees in host countries to facilitate voting at overseas polling stations.

Vanny Keoxayavong, Deputy Director General of the Department of Employment, said on February 19, 2026, that key measures include integrating worker data from Thailand, Japan, and the Republic of Korea; temporarily suspending new labor deployments during the election period; and facilitating participation through Lao embassies in host countries.

Authorities report 315,914 legally registered Lao workers abroad — including 302,430 in Thailand, 11,311 in the Republic of Korea, and 2,173 in Japan — along with 5,629 Lao students studying in 35 countries. Support measures include transport arrangements for students in remote areas to reach the nearest embassy polling station.

Ms. Vanny expressed confidence that the elected representatives will safeguard the legitimate interests of Lao workers and contribute to national development.
