(KPL/VNA)Malaysia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed a new monkeypox cluster involving four family members, with the index case identified as a non-citizen man who recently travelled to West Africa.

According to an MOH statement issued on November 16, the patient first developed symptoms on October 20 and tested positive for monkeypox (Clade II) on November 12. Three of his family members developed symptoms on October 30 and were confirmed positive for Clade II monkeypox on November 13.

All four cases are in stable condition and undergoing home isolation, the ministry said, adding that all close contacts have been identified, screened, and instructed to self-quarantine.

With 12 new cases recorded since the beginning of this year, Malaysia’s cumulative monkeypox tally has risen to 23 since the first case was detected in July 2023. Of these, 22 were Clade II infections and one was Clade Ib.

The public has been advised to continue practising preventive measures, including avoiding direct contact with individuals showing symptoms or suspected of being infected.

Although monkeypox is no longer classified as a public health emergency of international concern from September 5, the MOH said it will continue monitoring the situation domestically and internationally while maintaining ongoing preventive and control measures.
