The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is advancing decisively with preparations for its upcoming national elections, underscoring a strong commitment to the democratic process and the rule of law.

At a press conference held on October 28, 2025, officials confirmed the official launch of preparations for the election campaign, highlighting a series of significant developments that mark the beginning of an important national process.
The nation has successfully established and convened a National Election Committee (NEC) composed of 21 highly respected leaders from the top levels of the Party and State, including the President of the National Assembly and key government ministers.
The NEC is chaired by President of the National Assembly Xaysomphone Phomvihane, ensuring that the process is led and supervised by the highest legislative authority in the country. The Committee includes six women, reflecting a commitment to gender inclusion and broad-based representation in this vital national task.
The NEC has been given a clear and strong mandate to lead and oversee the entire election process for the 10th Legislature of the National Assembly and the 5th Term of the Provincial People’s Councils, in full compliance with the 2025 Constitution and the 2024 Election Law.
Acting with urgency and purpose, the NEC convened its inaugural plenary session on October 27, 2025, to establish a solid framework for conducting the election. This proactive approach demonstrates the government’s determination to ensure that the elections are conducted efficiently, transparently, and on schedule.
During the session, the Committee approved a comprehensive Operational Plan that defines clear objectives, targets, and guiding principles for the entire election process. It also finalized the organizational structure of the NEC, including the creation of five specialized subcommittees responsible for Secretariat affairs, Structure and Personnel, Propaganda and Mass Mobilization, National Defense and Public Security, and Administration and Budget. These subcommittees are designed to ensure that every aspect of the election is managed by qualified and experienced personnel.
The NEC also reviewed the Resolution of the Party Politburo, ensuring that the election aligns with national unity, political stability, and the country’s long-term development goals as it prepares for the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
Officials described the forthcoming vote as a “Great National Festival”, calling on all citizens to actively participate in this important democratic milestone. The leadership emphasized that the election aims to strengthen national unity and promote the democratic rights of the multi-ethnic Lao people, allowing them to elect capable representatives who will serve and protect their legitimate rights and interests.
All eligible voters have been encouraged to study the relevant election laws, understand their civic responsibilities, and take part actively in the upcoming vote.
The 2026 election will coincide with several major national celebrations the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of the Lao PDR creating a spirit of patriotic pride and optimism as the nation works to overcome economic and social challenges and move toward greater prosperity.
The official appointment and rapid organization of the National Election Committee clearly demonstrate that the Lao People’s Democratic Republic is well-prepared, well-organized, and fully committed to holding its landmark 2026 national elections in a timely, orderly, and effective manner.
