(KPL) On October 26, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings taking place from October 26–28, 2025.
During the meeting, the two Prime Ministers expressed their pleasure at the opportunity to meet, describing it as an important step towards further strengthening and enhancing the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Canada.
Prime Minister Sonexay congratulated Prime Minister Carney on his recent election as the Prime Minister of Canada and extended his best wishes for success in his duties.
Both sides highly valued the 51 years of friendship and cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations on June 15, 1974. Over the past decades, the two countries have maintained excellent relations and achieved positive outcomes across multiple areas of collaboration, particularly in political and diplomatic affairs, unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, trade and investment, education, and public health.
The two leaders agreed to continue promoting cooperation to yield more concrete results under both bilateral and multilateral frameworks, including mutual support in regional and international fora such as ASEAN, the United Nations, and other international organizations.
As the Lao PDR currently serves as the country coordinator for ASEAN–Canada cooperation for the 2024–2027 period, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation within this framework. Canada also expressed its support for the Lao PDR’s preparations to host the Third Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Vientiane in September 2026.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on regional and international issues of common concern.
