The Journalists Association of the Lao PDR, in partnership with the International Carnegie Foundation in Laos, officially launched a training course for managers and users of online social media, focusing on reporting green issues. The training is part of the broader initiative titled “Strengthening the Media through the Participation of Mass Organizations and Civil Society for Green Development in the Lao PDR.”

The training is part of the broader initiative titled “Strengthening the Media through the Participation of Mass Organizations and Civil Society for Green Development in the Lao PDR.”
The opening ceremony took place in Vientiane and brought together prominent figures including Mr. Somsavat Phongsa, Head of the Media Department; Mr. Savankhone Razmountry, President of the Lao Journalists Association; and Ms. Bouakham Douangpanya, Head of the GAMCIL Project. Academics, volunteers, and media practitioners also attended the event.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Savankhone emphasized the importance of equipping journalists and media managers with the tools and skills needed in the digital era. He noted that the training aims to enhance participants’ ability to produce high-quality articles, white papers, and multimedia content, especially on issues related to sustainable green development in Laos. The content is designed to reach both domestic and international audiences through modern communication platforms.
Ms. Bouakham Douangpanya explained that the GAMCIL Project—supported by the European Union’s Green Development Programme—works with public and private media to build the professional capacity of Lao journalists. The project promotes digital literacy, responsible media use, and awareness of green development issues, including climate change adaptation, workers’ rights, gender equality, and community development.
“The training will help participants understand the role of media in shaping public awareness around green issues, while also improving their digital skills, including responsible AI use, media ethics, gender representation in media, and countering fake news,” said Ms. Bouakham.
Launched in September 2023 and set to run through February 2027, the GAMCIL project aims to close the knowledge gap in digital and social media use while promoting accurate and ethical reporting. It also seeks to raise awareness about the media’s role in supporting sustainable development and green growth in the Lao PDR.
