(KPL) The newly renovated Emergency and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Building at Savannakhet Provincial Hospital was officially inaugurated on April 23, marking a significant upgrade to the province’s healthcare infrastructure.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Bounchom Ubonpaseuth, Governor of Savannakhet Province, Mr. Kongkeo Mivorachak, Chairman of the Savannakhet Provincial People’s Council, alongside hospital staff, doctors, and key stakeholders.

The 6.26 billion kip (approx. US$285,000) project was funded through a charity golf tournament, with contributions from provincial leaders, businesses, and local enterprises. Construction took nine months, from March to December 2024, expanding and modernizing the facility to meet growing healthcare demands.

Addressing Critical Needs

Before renovations, the hospital’s emergency room was severely overcrowded, with only 64 square meters of space enough for just 7 beds. Daily patient intake averaged 60-70 cases, forcing staff to improvise with temporary beds in waiting areas.

Dr. Chanthala Phamisith, Director of Savannakhet Provincial Hospital, emphasized the challenges: "The old structure hindered efficient care, and equipment was outdated. This upgrade ensures timely, high-quality emergency treatment."

Key Improvements

Emergency Room has been expanded to accommodate 15-20 beds (up from 5), with 8 fully equipped treatment rooms.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can accommodate 14-20 beds (previously 8), housed in 7 specialized rooms.

Governor’s Donation

At the ceremony, Governor Bounchom donated 20 hospital beds, 6 transport beds, and 2 nursing wheelchairs, valued at 380 million kip (approx. $17,400), further supporting emergency and ICU services.

The upgraded facility is expected to reduce wait times, improve patient monitoring, and enhance emergency response—critical for provinces prone to health-related crises.

"This is a milestone for Savannakhet’s healthcare system," said Governor Bounchom. "We’re committed to ensuring quality medical access for all residents."
