(KPL) Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand Maris Sangiampongsa and his delegation paid an official visit to the Lao PDR on May 30 to continue strengthening and enhancing the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Laos and Thailand.

A welcome ceremony in the honour of the visiting minister was held at the ministry. It was followed by a bilateral meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith and his Thai counterpart Maris Sangiampongsa.
Both sides highly valued the longstanding relations and cooperation between the two countries which have been enhanced with regular exchange of visits by senior leaders of the two countries, and Lao-Thai cooperation mechanisms at central and local levels.
They discussed and reviewed the cooperation in various areas including politics, Lao-Thai cooperation mechanisms, labour, border demarcation, connectivity, tourism, electricity, cooperation for development purposes, commemoration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025, addressing of smog problem, and the Lao PDR’s ASEAN chairmanship 2024.
The Thai side pledged it will provide a financial support for the construction of a coffee training and laboratory centre in Huaphan Province.
Both sides also discussed how to promote the implementation of future projects including the construction of a Mekong bridge between Chomphet and Luang Prabang City, the construction of the 6th Lao Thai Friendship Bridge between Saravan and Ubon Ratchathani and the construction of a Mekong rail bridge.
The projects are listed in the 5-year Lao-Thai action plan on strategic partnership 2022-2026.
They also agreed to continue to implement agreements the two countries have signed including the results of the meetings of the Lao-Thai Joint Commission (JC) on Bilateral Cooperation and the Lao-Thai Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).
Both sides also exchanged points of view on regional and international issues of common interest.
Laos is the first country for Maris’ overseas trip in his capacity as Foreign Minister of Thailand.
DPM Saleumxay expressed thanks for the priceless support and assistance Thailand has extended to Laos over the past years which have contributed significantly to the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR.
The Thai minister also expressed his commitment to continue working closely with the Lao side to promote the friendship and cooperation between Laos and Thailand and continue to support the Lao PDR under bilateral and multilateral frameworks in the future.
The Thai minister also paid a courtesy call to Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and attended a welcome party hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith.
