(KPL) The Lao government has laid out a strategic plan to increase the amount of renewable energy used in the country to 30 per cent of total energy consumption by 2025.

“Renewable energy consumption will ensure sustainable development and green growth for our country,” said Deputy Director General of the Renewable Energy Promotion Institute, Ministry of Energy and Mines, Mr. Chantho Milattanapheng.

Speaking at the Energy and Environment Partnership with the Mekong Region meeting in Vientiane on Tuesday, Mr. Chantho said that renewable energy can make a significant contribution to energy usage for national development.  As a result, the government is focusing on the development of renewable energy that is both clean and environmentally friendly.

To reach this target, it will be necessary to seek financial support and technical assistance for modern technology, expertise, and cooperation from both the government and friendly countries, Mr Chantho pointed out.

Along with the development of renewable energy, it is also important that people are aware of the importance of conserving energy.

Mr Chantho continued that energy is both necessary for the livelihoods of people and is also a significant component of national socio-economic development.

Currently, there are many countries around the world (Japan, for example) interested in using renewable energy because it is both clean and friendly to the environment.
