For generations of students in Savannakhet Province, Savannakhet Secondary School has been more than just a place to study.
Now, after more than six decades of serving local communities, the school is set for a major transformation that could reshape the learning experience for thousands of young people.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has provided a grant to rebuild and upgrade the school, creating a safer, more modern and better-equipped environment for students and teachers.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the China-aided upgrading and renovation project was held last Friday in Savannakhet Province, bringing together government officials, representatives of Chinese and Lao enterprises, teachers and other stakeholders.
Representatives from both countries jointly laid the foundation stone, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the long-established school.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Kingmano Phommahaxay said the project would significantly improve the school's educational infrastructure and provide students with a safer and more modern environment in which to learn.
He described the initiative as a tangible result of efforts to build a Laos - China community with a shared future, highlighting the importance of cooperation in education and human-resource development.

The project is expected to transform the school’s ageing facilities into a modern educational campus. Covering approximately 6,000 square metres, the development will include a modern teaching building, an office building, an indoor sports hall and supporting educational facilities.
These improvements are designed to strengthen not only the physical infrastructure of the school but also the overall conditions for teaching, learning and school operations.
Li Xizhen, Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Laos, said Savannakhet Secondary School is one of 10 schools in Laos receiving support from China.
Once completed, the upgraded school is expected to give students in Savannakhet access to improved educational facilities and a more advanced learning environment, helping create better opportunities for young people and supporting Laos' efforts to develop highly skilled human resources.

For students, the project represents more than new buildings and facilities. A modern classroom, improved learning spaces and access to better sports and educational infrastructure can create an environment where students can learn with greater confidence and pursue new opportunities.
The school’s transformation also reflects the broader role of education in strengthening the future of Laos.
By investing in schools and improving learning environments, cooperation between Laos and China is contributing to the development of the next generation of students, professionals and leaders.

The project carries additional significance this year as Laos and China celebrate the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. The school upgrade therefore stands as both an investment in Savannakhet’s education system and a symbol of the long-standing cooperation between the two countries.
As construction begins, the decades-old school is preparing for a new era — one in which modern facilities, improved learning conditions and stronger educational opportunities can help Savannakhet's young people build a brighter future.
